In the jewelry world “harlequin” refers to pieces of jewelry with multiple, seemingly random, colored stones and this sublime antique necklace is a wonderful example of the style. It features colored sapphires, tourmaline, garnets, and other stones, all set in multi-prong settings with crown-like galleries and suspended from a gold loop-in-loop chain. The necklace dates to circa 1900, right on the edge of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. MATERIALS: Sapphire, tourmaline, garnet, peridot. The gold tests as between and 9-11 karat. SIZE:39 cm long MARKS: None AGE: circa 1900 CONDITION: Very good antique condition. As expected with an antique piece, there may be minor bends or slight distortions to the gold necklace structure due to age and wear. Some of the stones may also show light surface scratches consistent with careful antique use. Overall, the necklace remains in very good antique condition and presents beautifully. The chain and the settings holding the stones have been tested and show between 9ct and 11ct gold. Please note that the clasp does not test as gold. This has been reflected in the description and pricing.
