Original 1948 charity boxing tournament poster for an event held at Thimblemill Baths, Smethwick, on Thursday 11th March 1948, organised for the Birmingham Council for Old People. The bill includes: Sammy Reynolds v Jacky Bryce Hal Bagwell v Len Davies Johnny Williams v Johnny Carol Les Allen v Cyril Vale Dennis Powell v Nick Fisher Billy Carrol v Geoff Heath A very interesting post-war Midlands boxing poster, especially because the Hal Bagwell v Len Davies bout is recorded in boxing records as having taken place at Smethwick on this exact date, with Bagwell winning on points. Bagwell was a very experienced Gloucester lightweight, and Len Davies was a Welsh fighter active in the same period. Another strong point is Johnny Williams, listed here before his later rise to major British boxing level; he later became British and Empire heavyweight champion. The poster has strong visual appeal with large red and blue typography, original fold lines, age toning, small edge wear and general handling marks consistent with age. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the description. A rare surviving piece of 1940s British boxing and Birmingham/Smethwick sporting history.
