Rare Early 19th Century French Empire Mahogany Fauteuil de Bureau An exceptional and highly decorative early 19th century Empire mahogany fauteuil de bureau, dating to approximately 1805–1820, featuring beautifully hand-carved ram’s head terminals of outstanding quality. This remarkable chair displays all the elegance associated with the finest Empire period furniture. The boldly carved ram’s heads, sweeping curved tub back, shaped open arms and beautifully proportioned frame combine to create a striking architectural design inspired by the classical taste of the Napoleonic period. The chair is constructed from dense solid mahogany and is exceptionally heavy, reflecting the quality of the timber and craftsmanship. The rich colour and beautiful figuring of the mahogany have developed an attractive deep patina over more than two centuries. The ram’s head carving is particularly impressive, displaying finely executed hand carving throughout the horns, fleece and facial features. Comparable examples of this design have been attributed to the circle and manner of Jacob-Desmalter, one of the leading cabinetmakers of the French Empire period, although this chair is offered strictly on its own merits and not as an attributed example. The chair remains structurally solid and presents beautifully. It retains excellent proportions and has later quality upholstery finished with decorative braid.
