Rare Victorian 19th Century Silver Mechanical Monkey Baby Rattle with Bells

An exceptionally rare Victorian silver mechanical baby’s rattle dating from the 19th century. This remarkable antique rattle features a finely modelled three-dimensional monkey mounted above the central pole. When the rattle is tilted, the monkey physically travels backwards and forwards along the pole, creating a fascinating mechanical action. The monkey is beautifully detailed, with textured fur, individually modelled limbs, an expressive face and a curled tail. One end incorporates a pierced spherical chamber decorated with star and trefoil-shaped openings, together with suspended bells. The opposite end is finished with two graduated spherical sections. Approximate length: 13 cm. No visible hallmarks or maker’s marks have been found; therefore, the precise maker and silver standard cannot be confirmed. The mechanical monkey moves correctly along the pole, and the bells produce a sound. The piece remains in good antique condition, with surface wear, light scratches, tarnishing and age-related irregularities consistent with a genuine 19th-century object.
